Job Summary
  • The individual serves the IAC mission to support research at KAUST and regionally by providing advanced techniques and expertise in advanced and routine biological electron microscopy in a user- driven environment.
  • The scientist serves this mission in his/her main area of expertise, which is cryo electron microscopy.
  • In addition, the scientist is expected to fulfill a multitude of laboratory and university-related tasks.
     
Major Responsibilities
  • Work in a team of scientists to conduct both routine and advanced research-grade sample analyses for different clients, guided by the Team Lead and IAC Lab director, in the areas of cryo EM imaging and cryo data analysis, including 3D reconstruction (single particle analysis and tomography)
  • Provide training to researchers, students and other lab staff on cryo sample preparations and Cryo EM imaging.
  • Contribute to the expertise build up in high quality cro sample preparation and 3D cryo electron microscopy,  including imaging and post imaging data analysis in single particle analysis and cryo tomography
  • Engage in KAUST research projects that require advanced electron microscopy techniques and provide value-added service
  • Keep up to date on most advanced techniques in in the specific area of expertise
  • Maintain and run EM sample preparation Lab
  • Ensure good laboratory practice and safety in the assigned work area at all times
  • Ensure maintenance status and maximum uptime of assigned instruments (plan, perform and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance, purchase consumables, etc.)
  • Perform routine laboratory duties and maintenance, including administrative, procurement, service on task forces and committees
  • Other duties as assigned by the team lead and lab director

Technical Skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in cryo electron microscopy, including EM cryo sample preparation, cryo EM imaging, 3D tomography and single particle analysis
Non-Technical Skills or Attributes
  • Good understanding of structural biology.
  • Some supervisory and organizational skills as well as ability to work effectively and efficiently in a multi-cultural environment, and collaborate with team members, lab users, and external service providers
  • Good communication and inter-personal skills
     
Required Education
  • Ph. D degree in life science, or science with good understanding of structural biology.
Required Experience
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience
