Job Summary 
  • Serve the ACL mission to support research at KAUST and regionally by providing most advanced techniques and expertise for custom and routine chemical analysis in a user- driven environment.
  • Lead a team of laboratory scientists and technicians whose expertise is the analysis of organic compounds using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques.
  • In addition, the Team Lead is expected to fulfill a multitude of laboratory and university-related tasks
Major Responsibilities
  • Oversee all activities in the Organics Analysis unit to ensure timely completion of work at the desired quality
  • Organize and distribute the work load in the Organics Analysis unit based on resource availability
  • Evaluate team members according to university policies and procedures
  • Serve as liaison between functional units in the ACL as well as between management and lab staff
  • Make recommendations to management regarding resource development of the ACL
  • Review and approve orders and requisitions for needed parts and consumables submitted by team members
  • Participate in drafting new policies and operational procedures for the ACL as well as the Core Labs
  • Serve as the Safety Representative for the functional unit
  • Manage ACL assets according to Core Lab guidelines
  • Assist the Director in day-to-day administration of the lab
  • Work in a team of scientists to conduct both routine and custom research-grade sample analyses for different clients
  • Develop and implement instrumental analytical methods and improvements to existing methods, including associated Standard Operating procedures (SOP)
  • Manage major analytical projects for internal and external clients
  • Provide expert help and advice to KAUST researchers and external partners in the specific area of expertise
  • Actively contribute and build expertise in a fast changing work environment; for example, by keeping up to date on most advanced techniques in the area of expertise and by taking on emerging tasks in an effort to provide value added service
  • Ensure good laboratory practice and safety in the work area at all times
  • Ensure maintenance status and maximum uptime of instruments (plan, perform and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance, purchase consumables, etc.)
  • Deliver high quality results at all times in a timely manner. Communicate problems to the management.
  • Provide guidance to junior lab staff on both routine analysis and project works
  • Identify areas for improvement in lab operations and suggest solutions for same
  • Perform routine laboratory duties and maintenance, including administrative, procurement, service on task forces and committees
  • Maintain a positive mindset and a persistent and resilient nature to support the future progress and success of the laboratory
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director

Technical Skills
  • Extensive theoretical and practical command over a wide range of chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, such as LC-UV, LC-MS, GC-FID, GC-MS, FT-ICR-MS etc. 
Non-Technical Skills or Attributes
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a professional consultant to faculty and external partners in selecting and conducting appropriate analyses for specific purposes
  • Good supervisory and organizational skills
  • Strong problem solving skills. For example, incumbent should be able to troubleshoot and conduct simple repairs independently or remotely guided by maintenance engineers
  • Ability to independently develop methods and validate them using chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills 
Required Education
  •  PhD degree chemistry, biochemistry or a related area
Required Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years
